Coronavirus, it is what everyone is talking about right now. All the media hype has many people on the edge of their seat and wondering what to do. On our recent flight to Florida we saw so many people wearing masks to likely prevent catching the Coronavirus. Personally, I find the media induced panic over the Coronavirus annoying but that doesn’t mean we should ignore it either.
Ignore the fear yes but with a level head, lets discuss some real strategies to discern what to do during the Coronavirus outbreak.

As I mentioned my husband and I observed many people at the airport wearing masks.
They had the best intentions and were on the right track but even a simple medical mask isn’t sufficient to prevent breathing in Coronavirus airborne droplets.
One needs a NIOSH approved N95 grade Medical Mask.
What else can you do?
I cannot stress enough how important washing your hands is.
Not only wash your hands but wash your hands the right way. Teach your children (especially the very young) how to properly wash their hands.
This is a good video to watch on proper hand washing and to teach healthy hand hygiene to children.
Notice it states how long to wash your hands which is important to stress to your children too. I once worked with an infectious disease doctor who taught his children to wash their hands while they sang their ABC’s twice.
That is what I teach to my children as well.
I see many people catching on to this but still I see people (especially the very young) openly coughing or coughing on their hands. Which spews viruses into the air that can travel 6 ft + and then land on surfaces for others to pick up. Something else to get in the habit of is coughing into the inside of your elbow and teaching your children to do the same.
Elderberry Syrup Inhibits The Coronavirus
Yes, this was very exciting research that I came across and so being the nurse that I am, I had to spread awareness.
A 2019 study observed the Antiviral activity of Sambucus FormosanaNakai ethanol extract and related phenolic acid constituents against human coronavirus NL63. The conclusion of the study found that Caffeic acid from Sambucus FormosanaNakai “significantly inhibited the replication of HCoV-NL63 in a cell-type independent manner, and specifically blocked virus attachment.” (Source: Pubmed Coronavirus elderberry)
You may notice in the above study the species of elderberry used was Sambucus FormosanaNakai which is different then the S. nigra species typically found in elderberry syrups. However, Caffeic acid is what inhibited replication and blocked virus attachment of the coronavirus. Caffeic acid is found in S. nigra species of elderberry as well. (Source: Pubmed Phenolic Contents of S.Nigra)
“Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a pathogenic chicken coronavirus. Another study concluded that S. nigra (elderberry) extract can inhibit IBV at an early point in infection, probably by rendering the virus non-infectious.”
I don’t know about you but I’m not going to wait in fear but I will start a batch of elderberry syrup.
