I love exploring nature with my kids. I look forward to our outside time. I thoroughly enjoy our nature walks. I find peace and solace when we sit beside a babbling brook as the chipping sparrows, yellow finches, and black capped chickadee all tweet their bird songs at the same time. I joyfully join in with my children as they try and catch the pond bull frog. I am a nature enthusiast and I love nature. However, not everybody does and I understand that.
Not everyone likes being outside as much as us. Some people don’t enjoy it at all. I am not saying they are right or wrong, each person is different. I happen to love nature but it is ok if you don’t. If this is you, I understand and I have a few nature study ideas you can do in your own home.

1. Caterpillar to Butterfly
We used this exact kit last year to grow painted ladies, it was lovely. I have wonderful vivid memories of my oldest observing the caterpillars as they formed their chrysalis and changed into butterflies. My favorite part was watching her gently coaxing them onto her finger so she could release them one by one.
2. Tadpole to Frog
The same summer we headed over to my dad’s house and caught tadpoles from his pond, we had the privilege to watch them grow to maturity. I get it though, not everyone wants to do that.
3. Praying Mantis
Ok-I do love nature but the praying mantis isn’t my favorite. That said-it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t learn from it. The Praying Mantis is this summers nature study goal. Find a praying mantis case and watch it grow.
6. Rock and Gem Dig
7. Egg to Chick
This is a nature study I am super excited about but it isn’t for this summer. I want to wait until my youngest is a little older and will be able to remember the experience. If you plan to do this, once the chick is able, find the closest farmer and donate it to him or her. Unless you want to raise chickens.

While I love our time outside, our nature walks and nature study. Nature isn’t for everyone and I understand that. You can do a nature study within your home. If you did, which nature study would you choose?
