If you have been following my living-science-a-monarch-nature-study, then you know we have been Monarch egg hunting for a few weeks now. I’ve been out with the kids a couple times already, searching milkweed leaves but we haven’t seen anything yet. In preparation for this Monarch nature study, I created a 25 page butterfly nature study packet and I made sure there is a little something for everyone in it.
I put a lot of emphasis on the monarch butterfly in this nature study packet. I hand painted the monarch butterfly anatomy sheet and monarch life cycle using watercolors. It also includes a Monarch nature study observational sheet, a place to enter your child’s own visual and written narration of a Monarch Butterfly. For even older children, I included a Monarch writing prompt that will require a little research on the monarch butterfly. Here is a website that may be able to get your older child started: monarch-butterfly/basic-facts.

However, the nature study packet isn’t exclusive to the Monarch butterfly. It also includes scripture copy work and two poems with a butterfly theme for additional copy work. I purchased varies watercolor painted (real) butterfly art on etsy and used those images for butterfly identification, which includes a keyword sheet for reference. This butterfly nature study packet also includes a butterfly living book list that we have all personally read ourselves, you can read my standards for deciding on a living book here: What is a living book?
My littlest who is 3, would not be too happy if he didn’t have something to do while my oldest is doing seat work. With the toddler in mind I included several butterfly coloring pages. I suggest using watercolors as it is a nice way to introduce them to your younger children but they can use crayons, coloring pencils, markers it is all up to you.
This year we are hunting for Monarch eggs in areas where if left to live they will most likely die. As an effort to protect the monarchs threatened species, our plan is to collect them, grow them at home and then release them once they grow to maturity. However, this may be too much work for some of us and I recognize that, we are all in different seasons in our lives. With that in mind you can do what we did last summer- raise painted ladies at home.

This Butterfly Nature Study Packet has been my baby, I put a lot of hard work into it. Including painting some of the images myself! I would absolutely love your feedback on this living science educational resource. Let me know what you think in the comments!
