Energy battery can cause several health problems

Energy is one of the most important sources for human. Energy produces power which is useful for many things, especially electricity. At first, the energy as the power source is only produced by power plant.

However, since 1800 centuries, the invention of battery by Alessandro Volta made it possible to carry the energy source anywhere. As the time is going, scientists have developed battery source made of Alkaline. Nowadays, the scientist found a battery source which is more advanced and powerful made of Lithium-Ion. Unfortunately, The application of Lithium-Ion battery has several negative impacts on the environment due to its rechargeability, longer lifespan, and lightness. Some manufacturers are beginning to use Lithium-Ion to create more powerful but highly efficient battery. Normally, an ordinary battery made of Alkaline is used only once and discarded. The electrode that already used is not reversible. However, the Lithium-Ion works in opposite way.

According to Chris Woodford, a British science writer says that in general, the Lithium-Ion battery has more than one cell, a power-making chamber. It consists three important parts such as a positive electrode (the + pole), a negative electrode (the – pole), and an electrolyte, the chemical which located between positive and negative electrode. When the Lithium-Ion battery is being charged, the positive electrode, Lithium-cobalt, shift to the graphite negative electrode through the electrolyte by releasing its Ions of lithium. In this process, the battery examines and saving the energy. Moreover, the battery energy is produced by the reverse movement of the ions from the negative electrode to the positive electrode through the electrolyte when the battery is not being charged. This is why the Lithium-Ion is rechargeable and has a reversible chemical reaction. Unlike the other ordinary battery, its rechargeability also makes the battery has longer lifespan and more efficient in saving the energy.

In addition, the Lithium-Ion battery is also lighter, which is easy to carry this battery anywhere. However, due to its advantages, the Lithium-Ion also has several serious effects on the environment. The effects of using Lithium-Ion would be a deliberation for its continuous application. The first cause is generated by Lithium-Ion battery can cause several health problems. The material itself is toxic or poisonous. If the seal of the battery was broken and the material accidentally swallowed or made a contact with human skin, the lithium could be absorbed into blood artery and contaminate the cell.

It can cause serious illness. In addition, Lithium-Ion is also reactive material and flammable. A Lithium-Ion battery consists of a metal roll and an ignitable ion fluid. This liquid contains small pieces of metal that hover on the liquid. The small pieces of metal can damage the breakable barrier, which divides the battery components, caused by undepressed battery substances. It makes the Lithium reacts with water in the air.

It results in high heat and igniting a fire (Helmenstine, 2017). The fire from exploding Lithium-Ion battery is also dangerous for human. The Lithium-Ion fire is able to produce carbon monoxide (CO), the gases that also found in vehicle exhaust. The gases are potentially causing strong skin, eyes, nose passage, and vastly harm the environment. The researchers from the Institute of NBC Defence and Tsinghua University explain that many people who overheat, damaging, or using a discreditable charger tools do not aware of its potential dangers (Rodzynska, 2016). The second cause is the mining of Lithium results in metal depletion and has limited source. The Lithium is considered as rare material.

This material is only found in Australia, Chile, Argentina, China, Zimbabwe, Portugal, and Brazil. It means that not all countries have Lithium metal source in nature. The European Union published a research titled Science for Environment Policy which compares the Lithium-Ion battery with the other kinds of batteries such as lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal-hydride and sodium sulphur. The research found that Lithium-Ion battery has the big impact on the environment, especially on metal depletion which means the recycle process of this metal is complex (Albrecht, 2014). Furthermore, the process of making Lithium-Ion battery must be combined with other metal sources like Copper and Aluminum which is the additional mining of these metals are required. The third cause is made by the process of making Lithium-Ion battery requires a big amount of energy.

In making Lithium-Ion battery, it must be combined with the other materials like Copper and Aluminum to obtain better battery performance. The extraction of Copper and Aluminum also requires a lot of water and chemicals which need a big amount of energy to process the extraction. It results the process is not efficient because we need to extract more than one material at the same time as ingredients to make Lithium battery. The energy from vehicles which carrying the materials, machine which combines the water, and combined with other chemicals to make chemical reaction could be wasted. In conclusion, in spite of the advantages of Lithium-Ion battery which make the manufacturers create an efficient and powerful battery, it can cause some environmental issues. The manufacturers should deliberate again to find any method to minimize the risk of Lithium-Ion battery by improving the battery components, battery safety, and make the battery to use fewer metal materials to decrease its environmental risks.
